p1 * [ Philmont Expedition 624D 1988 ] Our crew posing for the picture at base camp with the Tooth of Time on the ridge behind us. Standing left to right; Gordon Anderson, Eric Mills, and Alex Veley. Seated left to right; Danny Bach, Bob Michael, our ranger (I have temporarily missplaced his name), Bill Veley, and Brian Michael. Three of these five scouts later became Eagles. * 512 x 361 * (68KB)
p2 * [ Lovers Leap ] Our first day on the trail takes us past Lovers Leap. Eric carries our US flag on his backpack. At the end of the trek our crew chief gave me the flag and it has gone with me on every outing since then. I will not part with it. * 342 x 512 * (62KB)
p3 * [ Conservation Service Project ] Our Service Project was near Lovers Leap Camp. We had to cut some downed trees into moveable logs and move a rather large boulder from the trail. We were told that the trail was being widened to allow use for cross country skiing. Our lady Conservationist looks on. * 512 x 356 * (76KB)
p4 * [ Trail to Shaefers Peak ] The rain was certainly with us. But hey, no problem, were from Oregon. We were taking a side trip to the Tooth of Time from Shaefers Pass. The trail was very rough at this point. We were glad to only be carrying our day packs. * 512 x 356 * (66KB)
p5 * [ Catch the Rain ] Now we know what the rain fly is for. This was our camp site at Clarks Fork. We found interesting trails through the forest where the water from the storm had cleared the leaves down to bare soil. We would classify this as a

p11 * [ Baldy Skyline ] This is the trail across a scree field that leads down to Ute Meadows Camp. Miranda Camp is below on our left and Baldy is ahead of us in the clouds. We will lay over at Ute Meadows and climb Baldy tomorrow. * 512 x 352 * (62KB)
p12 * [ Top of Baldy ] This was a major accomplishment for our crew. Our lungs burned on the trail to this 12,441 foot summit. Two of the boys walked off the trail at a switch back because they were busy talking and the rest of us passed them, unaware that they were missing. They found themselves and joined us at the top. It truly felt like the top of the world. * 512 x 352 * (62KB)
p13 * [ The Continental Tie and Lumber Company at Pueblano ] Our guys are doing a little work to earn their keep. The log they are carrying will be hewn into a railroad tie with hand axes. Later, they will use a
p14 * [ The Rocky Mountain Scout Camp at Ponil ] Ponil was the first scout camp at Philmont and is a horse camp. Some of the scouts are trying to lasso a skinny steer while others are going for a trail ride. The building in the back is the cantina where the famous sarsaparilla root beer can be purchased. After many days on the trail nothing hits the spot better. * 512 x 346 * (62KB)
p15 * [ Archaeology Site at Indian Writings ] This is one of the excavation sites at Indian Writings where the scouts can get a hands on experience at digging into the past. Nearby is a museum where artifacts from the digs are displayed. * 512 x 346 * (64KB)
